Lead R&D Associate

The Lead R&D Associate is responsible for leading a research team to accomplish the goals set by the Chief Technology Officer. This role will be heavily involved in the scale-up of system processes and development and optimization of extraction techniques.

We highly value experience in the following areas: wild-type bacteria fermentation, bioreactor operation, extraction, technology scale-up, bioplastics (polyhydroxyalkanoates in particular), and green chemistry. Since the Full Cycle process does not use Genetically Modified Organisms, we do not consider experience with gene editing/CRISPR9/etc. to be necessary for success in the role.  

Please note that this is a pre-PhD level position.

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Ensure Safe and Efficient Lab Operations

  • Ensure safe operating practice within the laboratory according to Full Cycle and related third-party safety protocols
  • Lead the basic organization and maintenance of laboratory areas, equipment, and reporting
  • Manage inventory of chemicals and other consumable materials
  • Ensure laboratory supplies are stocked, refilled, and re-ordered as needed
  • Prepare and maintain laboratory reagents and stock solutions

Support Company Research & Development Activities

  • Support the CTO with the planning of experiments and execution of research projects related to various aspects of biotechnological manufacturing systems
  • Support the CTO with the scale-up of technology from lab to demonstration to commercial production levels
  • Support material, process and product development efforts as needed
  • Support generation of intellectual property for the Company

Lead Research Efforts

  • Supervise junior Laboratory Technician staff
  • Conduct bench-scale experiments as directed
  • Maintain bioreactor and other laboratory equipment through startup/shutdown cycles and perform regular maintenance
  • Identify technical problems related to experiments and seek appropriate advice to solve them
  • Collect sample material as necessary in the lab and in the field

Test, Collect, Analyze, Validate, and Report Results

  • Perform analytical testing
  • Perform and optimize material characterization and stability assays
  • Validate the precision and accuracy of various product characterization methods
  • Collect and analyze data as required
  • Assist with the analysis, interpretation, and reporting of results in an accurate and timely manner
  • Conduct analysis of polymer composition and material properties
  • Record detailed observations of experiments in a laboratory notebook and generate weekly and other summaries of development progress as requested

Maintain knowledge and stay current with industry trends

  • Review relevant training materials and pertinent scientific resource materials, as a source of information and guidance, when conducting research and laboratory tasks

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 5 or more years of experience in a chemical or biochemical laboratory setting
  • Experience with: technology scale-up, fermentation, extraction of products from biomass, analytical chemistry, biological systems, water quality testing, bioreactors, automated systems, material properties testing, and polymer formulation.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule as needed

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s degree preferred in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering (wastewater), Environmental Engineering, or related.

Laboratory Technician

The Lab Tech is responsible for maintaining the laboratory and executing R&D experiments as directed by the designated supervisor. The technician may also be involved in the Pilot facility operations as determined by company needs and directed by the CTO.

Please note that this is a pre-Masters degree level position.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of all laboratory areas, equipment, and reporting tools

Support Company Research & Development Activities

  • Follow supervisor direction for execution of research projects related to various aspects of biotechnological manufacturing systems as directed
  • Conduct bench-scale experiments as directed
  • Support bioreactor and other laboratory equipment startup, shutdown, and regular maintenance
  • Report any technical problems related to experiments
  • Collect sample material as necessary in lab and in field

  • 0-2 years of experience in a professional chemical or biochemical laboratory setting plus undergraduate experience with the same
  • Experience with: technology scale-up, fermentation, extraction of products from biomass, analytical chemistry, biological systems, water quality testing, bioreactors, automated systems, material properties testing, and polymer formulation is a plus.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule as needed

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, biological sciences or related discipline and/or equivalent work experience preferred

Director of Operations

The Director of Operations plays a key leadership role, responsible for the development and enhancement of operational excellence as the company’s production capabilities scale. This is the most senior operations position within the company and will be a core member of the management team. The responsibilities are wide-ranging, requiring flexibility, adaptability, and a high degree of personal initiative and accountability.

The Director of Operations serves as the project manager for new facility construction projects, develops operation and maintenance (O&M) programs and collateral, leads the delivery of O&M Services based upon customer agreements, and provides support services to Full Cycle’s R&D operations.

The Director of Operations reports to the CEO and works under the technical direction of the CTO. The position covers a broad range of activities – Project Management, Operations Administration, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Manufacturing Engineering, R&D, and Quality Control.

The Director of Operations is responsible for activities across multiple California locations, including our Richmond office, Albany laboratory, and facility operations in Mountain View and future locations.  

Activities may include, but are not limited to:

Project Management and Facility Start-Up Support at Pilot and Demo Facilities

  • Serve as the main contact point for Customer Pilot Execution
  • Coordinate engineering and procurement support
  • Lead construction and installation activities
  • Direct commissioning efforts
  • Oversee the efficient operation of the services detailed in customers’ Operation & Maintenance agreements
  • Train, develop and direct locally hired (customer) facility personnel
  • Track and report progress for billing/invoicing/project cost management.
  • Support the CEO and CTO in initial plant construction, installation, commissioning, and the establishment of core operating policies procedures, GMPs, permits, etc.

Engineering & Procurement Support

  • Collaborate with the CTO to minimize lags in engineering and equipment procurement for facility installations
  • Establish programs and manage the timely and cost-effective procurement of consumables for lab, pilot, and customer installations

Quality Control & Reporting

  • Develop and document appropriate manufacturing and quality metrics to ensure efficient operation of customer installations
  • Collect data and perform analytical testing as required to ensure on-spec production of materials
  • Develop and provide regular operations and quality reports.

Manufacturing Management / Systems Development

  • Develop and implement systems, processes, procedures, transactions, controls, and reporting necessary to ensure safe, on-spec, on-time, on-cost production.
  • Direct and coordinate programs essential to institutionalizing manufacturing procedures and provide organizational collateral for future Full Cycle technology licensing packages (e.g. training, safety, housekeeping, cost reduction, worker involvement, security, etc.)
  • Collaborate with the CTO to accomplish technology scale-up and production goals
  • Establish working relationships with and between internal personnel and external partners

Pilot Facility Operation & Maintenance Oversight

  • Collaborate with 3rd party suppliers to develop a preventive maintenance program
  • Oversee and administer 3rd party maintenance activities at customer installations

Other Duties as Assigned People Matters

  • HR & Personnel Support – provide Operations and R&D departments with the necessary support in recruiting, hiring, and training of required staff
  • Staffing – schedule appropriate operations staff at customer installations

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 5 or more years of experience in program, project, production, or operations management.
  • Prior experience in Food/Beverage/Biotech/Fermentation or Waste industries a plus.
  • Industrial and/or process industry experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with new plant construction, start-up, and technology scale-up preferred.
  • Prior experience with facilities maintenance such as electrical, HVAC systems, etc. preferred.
  • Willingness to work flexible shift schedule as needed
  • Demonstrated understanding of continuous manufacturing processes.
  • Understanding of general manufacturing principles and food safety systems.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree required, business or science related preferred. Equivalent experience considered. Master’s degree a plus.
